Stephen Lewis speaks: Global Access to Essential Medicines

Stephen Lewis is co-director of AIDS-Free World and author of
Race Against Time: Searching for Hope in AIDS-Ravaged Africa.
From 2001 to 2006, Mr. Lewis was the United Nations Special
Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, and his extensive career in the
fields of diplomacy and humanitarian work include roles as Deputy
Executive Director of UNICEF and Canadian Ambassador to the UN.
This event is sponsored by Universities Allied for Essential Medicines
as part of an ongoing campaign for the adoption of humanitarian technology
licensing practices at the University of Florida.
Meeting Minutes 3/19
We had an intense meeting last night, as far as work goes, but this is the most exciting and busy next two weeks of of our campaign!
Please read this email carefully to see what you need to do, and hopefully, to find more things that you can help out with:
-Buttons: We’re getting started on making them today from 1pm-3pm in the CLS (if you’d like to join us, meet us on the east side of the Plaza a little before 1).
-Laura has made the print outs and we’re going to be making 500 of them
-Speaker: Stephen Lewis is coming on Thursday, April 3rd to speak on the university importance in access to meds. He’ll be speaking at Pugh Hall from 6-8pm.
-James has agreed to drive Stephen around
-James and Luis have agreed to work on planning out classic fare for the event
-Mike has agreed to work on sound and venue set-up
-Mike has agreed to work on a press release for the two local newspapers and for the major listserves
-Celeste and Ruben have agreed to work on making a flyer for the event and distributing them WE WILL NEED VIDEO!
-Shirts: We are making 50, double sided white shirts with black script and logo.
-We will be selling them for $3 and tabling with dye so that people can dye their shirts and get to know us better!
-Laura has done a great job of putting this together!
-New Schedule: Our timeline for the coming weeks has been re-written to this:
-April 2nd–Deadline
-April 3rd–Stephen
-April 10th–Rally (happy or sad)
-Banner Campaign:
-Our tarp was unfortunately discarded.
-This weekend Laura is working on a banner announcing the deadline, and perhaps making a replacement tarp for the one that was torn down.
-Call her if you can help her out
-Our banner campaign will go back to full force the week before the rally
-Technology Showcase: It’s on 3/25 (this coming Tuesday) we need to show face at this because Win and Day will be there showing off their accomplishments
-Please email/call me if you can show up: it’s from 8 am-1pm at the UF Hilton by the Harn Museum on this coming Tuesday. It’s definitely okay if you can’t make it for th entire time.
-We will wear our UAEM shirts and display our researcher poster
-So far, Celeste, Mike, Laura and Gloria are coming

-Researcher Outreach: Laura and Eldo are coordinating this. They need your help, so please contact them!
-Laura is giving the research poster she made to Eldo. He will be keeping it down at the ARB so that people can meet up with him during lunch hours to talk to researchers about UAEM
-If you have lunch free (or can eat it down in the ARB) any school day, please let us know–we need you!

-SRO Meeting: Zach and I have a meeting with Day, Win and Dr. Khan a week from today, 3/27
-On 3/25 we will send a reminder email to them
-We will meet at my place at 6 pm this Sunday meeting to flesh out our presentation. Any of you are welcome to come.
-Board of Trustees: Eldo met with them during spring break. Thanks! He gave them our packets. We haven’t heard back from them.
-Anyone who would like to help me out in finding their emails to follow up with them, let me know know!
-AMSA Presentation: We are presenting at the last AMSA meeting on 3/26 at 6:45 pm to recruit for our speaker and rally.
-It will be a 25 minute presentation given in 5 minute intervals between their elections
-We will use a powerpoint to explain to them our cause, solution, who we are, what we do and the campaign.
-We will also bring buttons for prizes and play some games with them
-We are meeting on Tuesday, 3/25 at 4:30 pm at my house to put the presentation together, but it will have already been worked on by:
-Mike–powerpoint presentation
-Celeste–presentation and games/activities
-Gloria and Laura

Blog Updates
So, after several months of relative inactivity, the blog is back online! If you look to your right, under “Campaign Resource Links”, you’ll find everything we’ve been talking about for the outreach/ support gathering portion of our campaign- the big poster for researchers, a powerpoint to show to classes, the flyers to print and distribute, a pdf of the PCS and, finally, the PCS petition to UF. The calender has also been updated to show our meeting times for the rest of the semester and a few other important dates.
If you have anything else that you like to see on the website, please comment and let me know! Our recent publicity from flyers and the Alligator has already reflected in the number of hits on this site, and I’d like to make it as helpful and relevant as possible. Happy blogging!
